We will pick you up early from your hotel in Cusco to start our journey through the Andean mountains, stunning landscapes, and folkloric rural communities like Paucartambo and Ninamarca. The latter are funerary tombs of the pre-Inca LUPACAS culture. After climbing the last mountain to reach Acjanaco, the entrance to MANU NATIONAL PARK, we will descend into the cloud forest that houses a wide variety of wild flora and fauna, including the colorful Cock of the Rock, Peru’s National Bird, toucans, trogons, quetzals, monkeys, and the spectacled bear of South America. After a hike along an Inca trail that belonged to the antisuyo and an exploration of the forest, we will arrive at the Patria valley and our first lodge where we will have dinner and free time to enjoy some cold drinks.
After breakfast, we will explore the Amazon rainforest and visit a coca plantation field. Then, we can opt for an alternative activity: an 8 km rafting on the Pilcopata River or a visit to the Hinkiori petroglyphs. After lunch, we will board our boat and navigate for 40 minutes on the Upper Madre de Dios River to visit the Machuwasi cocha. In this small lake, we will observe a great variety of birds and animals, such as herons, hawks, ducks, hoatzins, orioles, capybara families, and more. After a hike along the Mono trail, we will navigate upstream and taste some of the fruits from the local plantations before returning to our comfortable rooms. At night, we will take a nocturnal hike with possibilities to observe snakes, caimans, capybaras, tarantulas, and other nocturnal animals, followed by a bonfire and toast.
Atalaya: After breakfast, we will cross the river by boat to visit the Hummingbird Garden before heading to the imperial city of Cusco. We will cross the cloud forest again to appreciate all the species in the area before estimating to arrive in the city around 4:00 PM.
